What are the Most Common Allergy Tests?
Treating allergy symptoms starts by finding out the cause. As a leading allergist in Mt Holly, I can help determine the cause of your allergies through a series of tests. There are several types of allergy tests. Let's go over the most common ones.

- Blood test – Blood tests are usually used if a patient cannot get a skin test. This type of test is also utilized when investigating other issues, such as immunodeficiency disorders, swelling episodes, or hives.
- Food challenge – A food challenge is performed when an allergy to specific foods is suspected. This type of test also helps determine if an individual can reintroduce a food they were avoiding.
- Drug and medication challenge – Like a food challenge, this type of testing evaluates a person's reaction to certain types of medication. It helps them figure out medicine they should avoid and ones they can reintroduce to their system.
- Allergy skin test – This is the most common allergy test performed. An allergy skin test can determine allergies to food, insects, the environment, and drugs or medications. The two types of skin tests are intradermal and prick skin testing.
- Patch testing – Patch testing is best for patients who experience contact dermatitis when an individual reacts to a specific material. An example of contact dermatitis is when a rash develops after wearing metal jewelry. The suspected material is placed on the patient's back to see if a rash occurs.
These tests determine a patient's allergens. Each test is performed in our office, and you will be evaluated after for any reactions.
