What is the Best Pet to Get for Allergy Sufferers?

Recent reports have come out that suggest that owning a dog can extend a person’s life. Other studies confirm that owning pets can be great for mental and physical health. Unfortunately, there are some problems associated with pets, which includes causing allergy symptoms to flare up. Some people think that hairless pets will not cause symptoms to start, but that is very much not the case. Roughly 15% of the U.S population is allergic to pet dander, not pet hair/fur.

Dander is commonly confused with fur and hair, but in fact, dander is far from that. Dander is microscopic skin cells that the animal sheds. The skin cell is usually covered in saliva (from grooming). The spit is what people are allergic to.

Considering what dander is and how it is made, a completely hypoallergenic pet does not exist. Due to their skin composition and fur, some breeds of dogs and cats produce less dander.

Good dogs include:

  1. Kerry Blue Terrier
  2. Bichon Frisé
  3. Poodle
  4. Portuguese Water Dog

Good cats includes:

  1. Sphynx
  2. Balinese
  3. Cornish Rex or Devon Rex

Other pets are:

  • Birds
  • Rabbits
  • Turtles or lizards
  • Hamsters or Guinea pigs
