Reducing Indoor Allergens This Winter

Many people would assume that the winter signifies an end of suffering for those with allergies. Unfortunately, this is not the case. While freezing temperatures mean an end to seasonal pollen allergies, indoor allergens are still very much an issue. Home allergens, such as mold, animal dander, and dust mites, may trigger allergy symptoms and cause illness.

If you notice that your allergies have started acting up during the winter months, there are steps you can take to decrease exposure to allergens.

  • Wash your bedding in hot water at least once a week.
  • Invest in a humidifier for your home. Ensure the humidity in your home is below 50 percent.
  • Clean your home regularly to avoid the buildup of allergens. Use a damp mop for hardwood floors.
  • While down pillows and comforters are comfortable, they aren’t best for allergy sufferers because they provide a home for dust mites.
  • If you have pets at home, don’t let them sleep in your room. If that’s unavoidable, make sure they don’t sleep on the bed. Also, change your clothes and shower after playing with your pets before getting into bed.
  • Wipe down wet surfaces immediately to avoid mold from growing.
  • If you’re the sufferer in the home, have someone else do the cleaning, especially the dusting and vacuuming. Leave the house during the cleaning, if possible.
