What Are the Most Common Asthma Triggers

While asthma is a relatively common inflammatory disease of the airways, there is not much known about its causes. While causes vary, there are common asthma triggers.

Allergies: Did you know that roughly eighty percent of people with asthma suffer from allergies to many things found in the air, such as mold, grass, pollen, and animal dander? It’s a good idea to get tested for allergens if you have asthma.

Exercise: Exercise-induced asthma is incredibly common as a heavy workout may cause airways to narrow. Coughing, difficulty breathing, and tightness in the chest are all symptoms of exercise-induced asthma. For most sufferers, symptoms go away within thirty to sixty minutes. However, some individuals may experience an attack up to ten hours after their workout.

Smoking: Since asthma is a disease of the airways, it’s no surprise that smoking is a trigger. If you have asthma and also smoke, symptoms such as wheezing and coughing may worsen.

Food: Believe it or not, but sometimes the things you consume will trigger an asthma attack. Food allergies along with asthma can be a very dangerous combination.

Medications: Asthma may cause some people to be more sensitive to certain medications. The most common medications to trigger an asthma attack are ACE inhibitors, painkillers, and beta-blockers.

While the list above highlights the most common asthma triggers, they are far from being the only. Other asthma triggers include the weather and stress or anxiety.
